What Do I Do With A Pet Rabbit?!

1.

Rabbits make excellent pets for families of all shapes and sizes, and they have the added benefit of being nearly silent, so they won't disturb you while you are working from home!

2.

Rabbits can be litterbox trained! They actually make excellent house pets, and love to be social members of the family.

3.

Rabbits can be trained to enter Competitive Hopping Competitions! These are modeled after equestrian jumping competitions but on a scale for the rabbits' size. (See below for pictures.)

4.

Rabbits need lots of exercise, take them into a secure area of your yard to play with them, or build a fort with them inside!

Cage/Safe Space

There are many different options to fit any budget, just keep in mind the ratio of 2-3 hops long by 1 hop wide, and tall enough for them to sit up without touching the roof.

Water

You can use a water bottle as shown or a crock/dish, but the water bottles are far less messy. My rabbits love to flip their water bowls in the winter to watch the water run...

Hay

You will need a hay rack and good quality Timothy/Orchard/Botanical hay. Rabbits eat 80% of their daily diet in hay, pellets only account for about 20%.

Toys

Toys! Every rabbit needs toys to play with, it gives them exercise, stimulates their mind, and can help you bond with them!

Food

Again, there are many options, but find a dish that is chew-proof, and preferably hard to flip over! Any complete Rabbit food will be fine, I use Manna PRO Rabbit, but as long as it has complete nutrition, you'll be okay.

Litter/Litterbox

You can use any litterbox you want, they make special rabbit ones, or you can DIY it. Just make sure you use the correct litter, so you don't jeopardize your bunny's health! Pelletized horse bedding, wood pellets, paper shavings, etc. are all good options.

Hidey-Holes

Now, not every rabbit gets to live in luxury as shown above, however, your bunny will need a place to hide, as rabbits naturally like to burrow and disappear. Make sure you have at least one hidey hole available to him/her at all times!

Grooming

Just like cats and dogs, rabbits need to be groomed occasionally. This includes trimming their nails, and brushing them every so often to prevent hair build-up in their tummies.

Here are some ideas of house rabbit set-ups.

Competitive Hopping

(Yes, it's a real thing.)

In the end, all that matters is that you do your best to treat your rabbit as best you can, ensuring his/her happiness throughout their lifetime. Rabbits can live upwards of 7-8 years, so be ready to have a new best friend for quite a while!
